NHS or private

You may have the choice to be seen through the NHS. Even if you are eligible you may still wish to see us as a paying patient or supplement your NHS eye examination with other tests. Who may get a free sight test through the NHS?

You can get a free eye examination if;

  • you are under 16
  • you are under 19 and in full-time education
  • you receive Income Support
  • you receive Pension Credit
  • you receive Income Based Job Seekers
  • you receive Family Tax Credit
  • you have Glaucoma
  • you have diabetes
  • you are over 40 and have a brother, sister, parent or child with Glaucoma
  • you have a complex prescription
  • you are considered to be at risk of Glaucoma by an Ophthalmologist
  • have an HC2 form (an HC3 form may pay partially towards an eye examination.)

Many of the above also allows you to get help towards spectacles and contact lenses, however there is no help towards contact lens aftercare fees. The amount of help will vary on your prescription and whether you have a need for bifocals or varifocals.

The NHS will only pay for a basis eye examination. If you require any other assessment you wil need to pay privately. This need not be expensive because it varies on the time required and the equipment and disposables used
